Paradox

Macroinformation and Paradox

Difference is the essence of information. Macroinformation emerges from meta-difference: different differences: discrepancies among categories. Conflict is close kin to macroinformation. Ah, paradox.

The following passage from Gregory Bateson is integral to my Theory of Macroinformation:Taking as an example the paradox presented by the man who says, "I am lying," we are caught in paradox because he makes a statement, and he makes a statement about this statement, the second being of a different order of abstraction from the first. The paradox arises from the interplay of these two levels of abstraction.

In discussing metacommunicative propositions, we land ourselves at once in this position because metacommunicative statements are of a different level of abstraction from the simple objective statements upon the stream of which they are carried.

A considerable amount of inquiry in the last twenty years has gone into the attempt to unravel these difficulties, which came to the fore in the twenties. It was then hoped that the whole of mathematics and logic might be made self-contained and unified without recourse to "self-evident" propositions, and Russell and Whitehead labored in the Principia Mathematica to establish such a unity between mathematics and logic. It was found, however, that any such attempt involved asking, "What is really meant by the 'self-evident" axioms on which any mathematical system rests?" and that the statements which would define the axioms and give them logical foundation must always be statements of a different order of abstraction from the axioms, as the latter are contained in the theorems which are built upon them. The statements explaining the axioms are in fact metacommunicative as compared with the axioms themselves, and the latter are metacommunicative as compared with the theorems. The status of the axioms therefore becomes ambiguous, since they are used at two levels of abstraction, one relatively metacommunicative and the other relatively "objective"; and the total system of statements thus becomes comparable to the electric buzzer which must oscillate between the "yes" and "no" positions.

Since the days of the Principia Mathematica the matter has become even more difficult and more directly relevant to the questions with which we are here dealing. Godel has now demonstrated with rigorous proof that no system of statements can be self-contained in the sense of explaining its own axioms and not self-contradictory; that always—as a result of the very nature of communication and metacommunication—contradictions of the Russellian type must creep in. This statement of Godel's—and there is apparently at present no reason to doubt his proof—means in fact that psychology and the study of human communication can never hope to build a self-contained and coherent system which will not be self-contradictory.

Of course I had read Bateson's Communication before inventing Macroinformation, at least in its present form. But then I responded to Bateson's teaching because he had gone so far in the meta-dimensions I was interested in: the bride knows what fertilizer to look for: I was trying to invent Macroinformation. But once I had invented it, years had to pass before I found it: spelled out under my eyes, decades ago. (I would have read Communication around 1980: after the publication of Mind and Nature but before I conceived my first novel, By the Hair of the Comet: based as it is on a note in Communication.

Macroinformation Brief

This post will be reposted each month. Editing will take place in the latest version as this original gets further out of date. But then this "original" is an Nth generation offspring recreating an original of 1999 which itself is based on a conception from the mid-1960s.

Information issues from difference:
the more improbable, the more information.

Powerful information issues from differences among metadifferences:
the more metadifferences,
the more complexity among them,
the greater the potential of the information.

Macroinformation is my term for the information that emerges from our mental processing of informational complexities.

We don't just process data: there's data, and more data, and tons of information already in our heads: and we process parts, and wholes, in an informational environment. The real information, the whole of the information, the macroinformation, must be seen to interact in an ecology of information.

The kids chant Nyah-nyah. They're chanting the fifth and third of a chord: where's the root? The root remains unchanted, but it's "there," we hear it.

The wife gets "B"s tatooed on her rump because her husband loves her beautiful buns. She strips, bends over, and her husband asks, "Who's Bob?" We have data for the Bs; where did the "O" come from?
Well, we have that information too, but it appears in our processing of the joke, there's no data for it in the joke.
The movie shows Captain Renault being handed a wad of cash from the roulette cashier's cage. The sound track has Captain Renault saying, "I am shocked, shocked to learn that there is gambling going on in here," and closes Rick's casino down.The information that follows us home from the theater wasn't in the pictures and it wasn't in the words. Neither was it in the music. The information that haunts us emerges from inter-playings, even conflicts, among the constituent information complexes: words, pictures, actions, sound effects, music ... all processed in minds that already know something about the world.

Information begets information.

The most important information emerges as meta-patterns that rise above data the way a flock of birds rise above the earth. Without the earth, there are no birds; without the birds there is no flock. But their beauty is in the metapatterns.

The meaning of information is in the metapatterns.

Claude Shannon, Norbert Wiener ... defined information in terms of the inverse of the probabilities. There's more information is the string 2, 5, 13, 87 ... than in the string 1, 2, 3, 4 ... There's more information in Steve Allen's "Roses are red,/ Violets are blue,/ You thought this would rhyme,/ But it doesn't" than in any of the familiar Roses are red jingles.
Probability is wonderful, and dangerously counter-intuitive, and I make use of it; but Gregory Bateson defined information as
Any difference that makes a difference.

Difference is is a concept that fits the non-mathematical human right down to the ground, and if you can follow me into meta-difference, we shall flock like birds in the stratosphere of complex, emergent information.



What started me on this path may be of some relevance and interest. By college age I was beginning to get fragmentary explanations for seeming-informational contradictions I'd been aware of since childhood. During WW II, from the US, Hitler was the bad guy. So how come the MovieTone News coverage of his rallies was so exciting? Because our documentary makers were using footage from Leni Riefenstahl, the genius of filming mass rallies.

The documentary that showed our bold leader, President Truman, firing the miscreant General MacArthur, showed Mac marching like a hero, while sunlight flashed annoyingly from the elected haberdasher's eye glasses. Whose side were the documentary makers on?

Marlon Brando had a skull that could star in any museum. Elia Kazan filmed him in naturally contrastive black and white, looking one moment like a brute ... But change the camera angle one millimeter, change the lighting one candle-power, and Marlon looked like a Roman god. Complex information exploded from these minute differences.

Then in graduate school I first heard of information being stored on some medium for a computer. Fine. Then I heard that one could count the bytes involved. Fine. Then I heard that this was regarded as giving a quantitative value for the information! Balderdash.

First, the data will be very different depending on how you've "spelled" the data. English is far from efficient, even among natural languages. But far more important, data is being equated with information! No, no. The data is this bird and that bird. The information is the flock flying in what we see as a "formation."

I had a thesis to write, then a revolution to foment. I put my 1960s thoughts on information on a back burner. It wasn't until I decided to heat the subject up a bit early in 1999, starting writing that soon got posted as Macroinformation, that I learned that Norbert Wiener had said that there was more information in a good poem than there was in the phone directory for a major city. Had I known that in the 1960s I would have assumed that the information theorists were taking proper care of their business. As it was, I long believed them to be missing the core of the point. Now; whatever they do, I don't know. Macroinformation is what I do.

And I've noted some patterns in emergent information that I believe are essential to wisdom on the subject.

When I heard that some computer people thought they were quantifying information I was indignant, but not because I believed that information could not be quantified. I do believe it. I still believe it. I think I am taking the correct steps in that direction. The more steps I take however the more I see that particular goal as still very distant. That doesn't mean we can't get there, or at least get closer. But however close we get, however far we remain, efforts at quantification will remain more like quantifying the electricity in a thunder storm than weighing a cabbage on the grocer's scale. Meantime I say that a hypothesis I hope to develop toward theoryhood believes that the quality of information will prove to be directly proportional to the quantity, not of the data, but of the complex information, the macroinformation: the synformation, the synergy of the information. The more overtones, the more that is implicit, suggestable, between the lines ... the better the poem, the painting, the tune, the speech ... The greatest literature will prove bottomless.

My attempt the other day at a new Entrance for Macroinformation resulted in an emphasis on my Spectrum of Informational Complexity. [Link temporarily down.] I must relate that to my concept of informational dimensions, which relates to my concept of Extension / Intension (now posted here as of 2009 03 26), and non-spatial dimensions. Which relates to ... and so forth. I'm getting it all here the best I can.

Mi Origins: pk's Prigogine

Prigogine on Certainty: and the Origins of pk's Theory of Macroinformation

Entropy Magazine in 1999 wanted me to submit for publication the note on Ilya Prigogine — on Certainty, on Time — I'd posted at Knatz.com in the spring of 1998 as a footnote to my indictment of public school math. I thought, Oh, but that's not complete, I don't think I could complete it overnight; but I ought to be able to knock together a theory of complex information over the weekend: that"s been simmering on my back burners for decades. I still haven't finished "knocking" Macroinformation together, and I certainly never finished the note on Prigogine, but here's what Entropy had responded to:

Do not imagine that my couple of quick references are an adequate substitute for knowing the Prigogine work referred to directly. If you too are traumatized by mathematical notation or are less than literate in it, read the opening sections and final chapter of The End of Certainty. From 1979 to 1989 I was occupied principally in trying to communicate Korzybskian semantics to my fellow man. Does your mental model match reality? Does anyone else’s? How can you tell? don’t you see that our survival depends (in the long if not in the short run) on some degree of accuracy?

The mental models we inherit too often are compromised by lazy, not to mention shoddy, thinking. Political and economic motives are so interwoven there’s no untangling them. But the latter isn’t necessary. Amnesty for all. Just improve your mental models. Meet the truth. Not as "land" or "power" as in the view of Norman Mailer’s Pontius Pilate. Not as ’whatever my version of my sect of Essene Jews is obsessed with’, as in the view of Norman’s Mailer’s Jesus. No: improve your mental models as in the scientific method.
Do the details of my model correspond with verifiable events in space/time? Does the picture they make jib with responsible theory? Am I careful to weed out as "dead" theories that don’t jib?

I’d been meaning to write a little piece on semantics to go with my map/territory piece (link above). The related material here nudged me to add a bit more as Semiotics/Semantics. (Actually, this is also a start on the fragmentary discovery section of my Knatz.com bio!.)

Should we trust science because someone calls it that
word? Should we have trusted the actor costumed in a white coat who used to tell us to smoke Camels? Science is only science when you, anyone, can review the reasoning, check the math, examine or challenge the data. (That becomes problematic when the data is Lucy’s bones and even having a Ph.D. in the field won’t necessarily get you near them.)

I’ve reviewed Prigogine’s reasoning: it’s awesome. I’m familiar with much of his data: it’s not just right; it’s right on the pinnacle. Others that can have already checked the math: I have to let that part pass.

The book is published. It’s in print. Maybe it will come out in paperback. Nevertheless, as I find time, I plan to summarize part of his argument. Here’s a start:
Many problems in science and philosophy (including religion) may be constructively subsumed under the problem of time. What is time? Does it have a beginning or end? Is it meaningful to think of anything as possibly being outside of time? Did time begin with the Big Bang? or any other Creation? Is time reversible? or unidirectional? ...

Other questions are intertangled. Are things determined? (All things? Some things? Which things?) Is our own behavior determined? Can we ever choose behavior? Or is free will an illusion?

Prigogine traces decisions made or assumed with regard to these questions through the recorded history of human thought. The record is clearest in science from the Greeks to the present, it being science which makes a virtue of examining assumptions.

Science up to and including quantum physics has typically assumed that time is reversible. Einstein believed that time was an illusion.

Einstein also believed that free will was an illusion. (Stephen Hawking’s recent popular books continue that vein of the argument: ’yes, it’s all determined but the etiology is too complicated to trace or predict’.)

Prigogine argues that time has no beginning and no end. The universe began within time and may end within it (as could other universes). Time is real. Time is unidirectional. Entropy assures that processes begun cannot be reversed.

The universe is one of evolutionary Becoming, not one of eternal Being. Choices are possible. Choices matter.

My History of Magic and my short piece on revolution distill what I see as most important to digest from Sir James Frazer’s monumental The Golden Bough. That seminal anthropological book is towering and encyclopedic, staggeringly researched, incisively argued. I’ve spent decades with that work and feel confident in my simplification, however sweeping.

I hope you’ll notice that Prigogine’s points are directly relevant to points I’ve ridden on Frazer’s back to make: human confidence in its ability to determine cause and effect has been misguided. When we want to become the cause and to be certain of the outcome, our confidence is pathological.

Prigogine’s book is new. But I see it as even more important than The Golden Bough. The mental models of reality we learn from science and philosophy are themselves due for a spring cleaning. Prigogine gives it to them.

My first awareness of my preference for Becoming over Being came to me in my twenties, due in large part I am sure to my voracious reading of George Bernard Shaw. Shaw cites Butler as his source. I’ve since studied Butler and Butler’s sources. Hooray (Wallace/) Darwin. I’m helping Epicurus-Darwin-Prigogine the best I can despite my disabilities. Some of what’s here is already implicit elsewhere on this site. Most of the rest will be siphoned off to more appropriate locations.



Notes for more:

Scientists too have shared Descartes’ longing for certainty, for simple logical connections, for simple cause and effect relationships ... Descartes lauched his campaign for certainty with the "syllogism" Cogito: ergo sum. Cogito? No argument. Sum? No argument. Ergo? Balderdash.

A view of time common in many religions is that it has an inside and an outside. Men and other creatures are inside it; God is outside it. With the right magic we can get outside with Him. Beyond mortality and mutability.

Science is in part descended from our age old pursuit of control, our assumptions about simple cause and effect. Prigogine traces man’s pursuit of simple cause and effect. If I do A, then B must happen. I want also to be certain about C through Z. If magic doesn’t work, we’ll try technology ... as another form of magic.)

My son heard the word "scientician" on The Simpsons and has proposed that there be three words to describe the range of "scientists": scientist (for those who actually know and follow the method; scientician (for those who have learned and can perform by rote a set of procedures); and sciencist (for a member of a priesthoold of some particular set of paradigms). The same suffixes could be useful in other fields: I am religious; the cardinals who persecuted Galileo were religiousists, the dunce trained to say mass correctly is a religiousician (or a religician).

It’s been my intention since the inception of my home page to have the individual modules load quickly and read in a couple of bites. Notes were typically put in an accompanying file. Today more and more people have faster CPU’s, more memory, faster modems ... and I merge some files (& separate others).

This particular file however is as hairy a bear as any of my problem sections. Entropy Magazine asked to publish the section on Prigogine. Great, but that section is a part of this file, which in turn is part of my indoctrination folder, which interweaves with the entire home page (as it does with my entire life).

Entropy agreed to let me develop the theory of Macroinformation first. Years are slipping by and still none of it is published: except here (where it most belongs).



Context is important. Once again, the above "paper" had started as a footnote to my indictment of public school math; that module had been a footnote to my indictment of public school; and all of my school indictments had been illustrations for my modules on my own personal school indoctrination. Remember at all times that I, pk, am the deschooler. In 1970, with Ivan Illich, I founded The Free Learning Exchange, Inc., and offer of a cheap low-tech internet, voluntary public data-basing being offered as an alternative to schooling, to commercially controlled media, and so forth. So, my autobiographical pieces were intended as public prototypes: it was "personal" only by unavoidable coincidence.

Macroinformation Synonym

In the 1960s my word for complex information was alternately "information" and "art." I invented the term "macroinformation" to represent meta-information beyond the complexity of either metadata or mere language with its grammar. I intended the macro- prefix to echo science's concept of the "macrouniverse." That is, I intended the word to suggest something whose principal existence was mental with overtones of "constructed": in particular, socially-constructed .

If anyone has understood me properly I remain unaware of it. (The same holds in all of my creative endeavors: the society seems determined to preserve kleptocracy by not allowing independent or creative thought.) Trying to tell an old friend about my efforts recently, I decided to try a different term: "synformation." Same concept; different primary image: synformation was coined to suggest "informational synergy." (Hallelujah, Bucky!)

Below I repeat something recently revived for any home-page I can get reestablished:

My original appellation for synformation was meta-information. (That was before I ever heard of meta-data.) Once I did hear of meta-data, I questioned my choice. I didn’t want readers confusing meta-information with meta-data. I further didn’t want readers confusing meta-information with the silliness of centuries called "metaphysics." But those objections pale beside what remains my main reason for the renaming: "macro-" suggests to me the macro-universe.

2002 11 22 I intend the prefix "macro-" to suggest that the information is composite: it is assembled. Even more important, note that such assemblages exist in the mind (and only in the mind).

You can’t go to the city of Casablanca and ask a taxi driver to take you to the "irony" (not and be recognized as speaking a human language sanely). The irony resides in the mind of the audience viewing the movie of that title.

Before the invention of post-Renaissance optical instruments, people thought that what they saw was the "world." With microscopes and telescopes we see both inwards in scale and outwards without finding any "end" yet. Previously assumed boundaries have been breached again and again. The atom has been divided theoretically (and actually split). The divisions have divided. Our "Sun" has become a star among stars. The Milky Way has become a galaxy among galaxies. New super-structures are being imagined. Even modern telescopes don’t see those structures: like quarks, they’re "seen" only with the mind. The Hubble Telescope gives us no universally recognized image that all can identify as a "bubble." Neither did the movie Casablanca give us data which we could identify one-to-one as "the irony of Captain Renault’s corrupt hypocrisy." We can show each other sheet music for someone’s arrangement of Amazing Grace: but seeing all the notes, even all the notes with all the chords, as in a fake book, does not show either of us the "music." The symbols for the notes may form on my retina. Some understanding about the meta-relations of the notes may begin to form in my optical cortex, but something has to stimulate my auditory cortex and the whole mix and blend (or lump and mix) in my mind before there is music. Synformation, like a macro-particle, or like the macro-universe, is a wholly mental phenomenon.

Once astronomers saw that they were assembling models more than "seeing" "things," it became easier for other thinkers, thinkers from more than one specialty to begin to sense the humiliating but irresistible concept of semiotics: a science in which your own hand before your own face is also a mental construct: there are no bones, skin, or fingers in the brain; even what we see directly is an image.

Our reifying mental images as concrete things may be inevitable. Psychologists tell us that humans are congenitally incapable of maintaining distinctions between map and territory. Trouble escalates, perhaps quantumly, when we forget, or—worse—deny, that we are fuzzing our categories. Roughly a millennium ago some thinkers were treated very badly for saying the obvious: that our categories are categories. (Nominalism became a heresy; the confusion of ontological categories was called "Realism.")

These points were fairly well along in their development at Knatz.com before I embarked on developing Synformation. I have labored as much as I have toward essays like Mental Modeling because I don’t see that people (including academics) (including (a majority?) of scientists) "get" it. It isn’t just the thinking in the marketplace or in Washington DC that’s still medieval: stuck in Realism: that is, in believing their own metaphors.

Macroinformation Update

Review: My thinking on complex information (art, politics, religion ...) commenced in the early 1960s while in graduate school. I left it on a back burner while I tried (and failed) to communicate my reading of Shakespeare's sonnets as complex meta-information to my graduate faculty. I kept it on that back burner through the 1970s as I tried, with Ivan Illich, to recommend cybernetic data basing to replace authoritarian information structures: no (dictatorial) school, no (dictatorial) government (no (dictatorial) Church); just public-volunteered information (while we all learn to mind our own business).

My thinking on complex information moved forward on my stove in the late 1990s when Entropy Magazine asked me to submit my notes on Ilya Prigogine, science, and "certainty" for peer-reviewed publication. I responded that Certainty would take me a while to prepare, but that I could knock out a theory of complex information over the weekend: would he consider that in the meantime? (Since then, now, see: Macroinformation in Brief.)

(I'll post those Prigogine notes here: they had been at Knatz.com, but Knatz.com got scuttled by the fed.)

In the late 1990s the first materials I assembled on the subject got posted in the "Teaching/Scholarship section of my home page. That section became a separate folder when my home page moved from my local ISP to a "Knatz.com" folder at my online art gallery (PKImaging.com, all pk domains destroyed in 2007). Later that section inherited its own domain: Macroinformation.org. All that was trashed by the US in the United States versus Paul Knatz, February 2007. Ah, but I'd also started this Macroinformation blog: and the federal proscription didn't reach my several blogspot.com blogs!

Now, if the parole office will leave me in peace, I'll try to recreated all "Knatz.com materials at these several blogs. An similar attempt to restore my Thinking Tools recently failed. I'll try that again: and I'll try to put all information theory materials here.

(Anyone who bought online storage and invited me to recreate Knatz.com would get points in heaven (anyone who doesn't will have to remain here in hell).)

Macroinformation Analogy

Analogy, somewhat loose:

The sky above much data is dry. Macroinformation forms like a cloud over some data: if the data generates associative dynamics: a mental cloud. The data is of the earth: stones and bones; the macroinformation is of the sky, incorporeal, and tends toward the cosmic.

The cloud may be dark, may be fluffy as cirrus, may have a silver (or black) lining. The cloud may be more luminous than the dry sky. The cloud may be incandescent.

Informational World

The "world" is far more informational than material. And the information that concerns us relates far less to objects than we realize: to our immanent danger.
Macroinformation is my offer of what's intended as a giant step toward survival: toward self-defense against the manipulators: both deliberate and merely conveniently conscious: aware only enough to guide the lies, deceptions, misinformations. To protect us against governments, churches, schools, parents, used car salesmen, all the purveyors of deception, the victim-victimizers.

We're not as bright as we pretend. Some is deliberate, some is unnecessary. If we could step up in informational sophistication, if the consumers of information had some of the same tools of awareness that the manipulators had, we might thrive better: and less kleptocratically.

Macroinformation is my caution to those who would mature from kleptocracy, or at least those who sympathize with the victims of rapacious civilization (and that's all of us) to resist the civilization's convenient naivte about complex information.
The reigning epistemology encourages associating information with data, as though the word spoken, the word, written, is the thought meant: and that's all.

No, information, real information, the important information, though it cannot exist without data, has no more to do with data than "you" have to do with the atoms in the molecules in the cells of your body. Certainly you cannot exist without them; but you are so much more (and so much less) than they are. Sure, we're attoms and molecules and cells ... and also what made us vote for Hitler, for Nixon, for Bush, what makes us weep in La Strada, what makes us fall for the gypsy repairing our car ...

We live in a conceptualized world far more than in the physical world. we live in the unspoken world as importantly, more importantly than in the spoken. Information mixes data with implication with inuendo with lie with mistake ... with eidetic information.

Macroinformation:
Concrete versus Eidetic Information

Macroinformation is my term for that part of information which is constructed in the mind, varyingly implicit in the data. Some information is explicit in the data, the data and the information are the same, coextensive: c-a-t, cat. The bulk of information however is emergent from data but is not at all coextensive with it: the meaning of Shakespeare's salad days, for example.

Some macroinformation is "real" in the sense of relating to physics (illustration in a moment); the bulk of macroinformation is eidetic: existing entirely in the mind, wholly and solely in the mind (illustrations ubiquitous at Mi.org).

A. When kids chant nyah-nyah at someone, universally and without the need of musical instruction, they are chanting the fifth and third of a chord, the root, or tonic, of the chord left unchanted.

Orchestrated, the C would be present in the bass, in the continuo. Silent, on the playground, our minds hear it anyway. The relationship to C is not fanciful, not imaginary; Pythagoras established it in the overtones of any vibrating string: and the vocal chords are vibrating strings.

B. In contrast the hypocrisy that movie-goers hear in Captain Renault's utterance, "I am shocked, shocked, to discover that there is gambling going on in here," is wholly eidetic. The macroinformation emerges from the discrepancy between the police chief's utterance and his behavior, cashing in his chips from the roulette wheel he professes not to know the existence of. A C chord can be constructed in the lab; but not morality. Ethics exist only in human talk about things. We weave data and more data, macroinformation and more macroinformation, but it's eideticaly-based first and last.

Some macroinformation bridges the "real" and the eidetic. In the joke where the woman has a B tattooed onto each cheek of her buttocks because her husband likes her "beautiful buns," she strips and bends over, he asks, "Who's Bob?" The "B"s are explicit in the data of the joke; the "O" is seen in the mind of the hearer of the joke. The "O" relates to human anatomy which can be established in the lab, but unlike the root of a chord where the relationship is necessary, relating a sphincter to a letter of the alphabet is not necessary: only sentient creatures in a literate culture would do it.
I expect that dolphins would hear the root in nyah-nyah; I doubt if they would get the joke about Bob.

I select macroinformation's prefix to relate my concept to scientists' concept of the macrouniverse where the bulk of the contents of the world are mental constructs. We see light -- we construct "sun," "stars," "galaxies," a "universe" ... each other ... our selves.

"Cat" can refer to a specific organism; more often we mean a concept. Even with "cat," data gets left far behind.

Tell the Truth

"Tell the truth."
Huh? "Tell" means use symbols, manipulate them, utter (or record) speech.
Incompatibly, "truth" symbolizes the actuality, the raw territory: that which Korzybski (Bateson, pk ....) insist is unutterable.
Make the map BE the territory. Impossible. A fools errand.
Exactly the kind of instruction a kleptocracy issues so irresponsibly, so destructively: to keep us all off balance: and the truth far from our apprehension.

Charitably, we interpret "Tell the truth" to mean "Don’t lie." Don’t knowingly misrepresent facts, events, interpretations.
But carry it to its absurd implications: imagine the mortal demanding of the god, "Use my shaggy finite symbols to inform me about infinities, the cosmos: ... all time, all universes, all forms of being: and non-being. Convey to me your essence: and the essences of all the meta-essences beyond you."
Why turn the mortal into a pillar of salt? The mortal already is a pillar of salt.


Information "is" any difference that makes a difference; macroinformation "is" any and all of the differences between the data and the information.

To master information rather than be its victim existential distinctions must be plumbed at depths not supported by the culture. Get further than an inch and no bureaucrat, no priest of the kleptocracy, will understand you: or permit you to talk unimpeded.

For the half-dozen years in which I’ve been developing my theory of Macroinformation I’ve harked to one of the complex images in Shakespeare that first made me lust to develop such a theory: "salad days." The data seems simple; the information is more complex than scholarship since the early 1600s has exhausted. I also added examples where key data is implicit rather than explicit: the tonic to the chord chanted by "nyah-nyah"; the "O" in the joke "Who’s Bob?" ... Today an example I’ve dealt with at Knatz.com, but not yet at Mi.org, shoves itself upward, demanding inclusion at the top:

The common phrase -- tell the truth -- is an oxymoron: of a type similar to "Jesus Christ": contradictions built-in.Jesus is a name; Christ is a title: Jesus is a man; Christ is a God: Jesus is natural; Christ is magical ...
"Tell" means utter by symbols, by the patterning of language; the "truth" is the actuality. The imperative to tell the truth demands an act which is impossible: to make the map BE the territory.

Metadifference: Truth

One of the more subtle aspects of Macroinformation manifests when sameness, the opposite of difference at the data level, registers as difference at meta-levels. Information is significant difference; macroinformation emerges from interactions among different differences, the more so as the different differences are mutually orthogonal.

I’ve long illustrated this point, long before coining the term macroinformation, with reference to the comic effect of character acting. When we see certain characteristics distilled to perfection we respond to the memesis as humor. Richard Nixon being perfectly himself was comic. A skilled actor imitating Richard Nixon being himself was comic. In the first case identity manifests as metadifference; in the second case the metadifference is more apparent. Sir Anthony Hopkins is not Richard Nixon, neither is the nightclub entertainer. But Nixon’s own behavior sparked metadifferences, his behavior being so complex, so conspicuously saturated with anomaly, discrepancy, double-standards, hypocrisy ...

But that’s just one instance. With an actor playing a pickpocket, acting it just right, the perfection stands out: metadifference.

When liars -- read that as all of us -- tell the truth, it’s funny. When a critic has a perception that leaves his normal medicrity in the dust, it’s funny. When an historian with an obvious agenda is momentarily objective, it’s funny. And humor, always, is proof that macroinformation is present.

Richard Pryor had it exactly right: "If you tell the truth it’s going to be funny."

For years now I’ve kept a folder of Examples of Macroinformation, the folder subdivided into sometimes subdivided categories: poetry, movies, painting ... A parallel attempt to organize illustrations of macroinformation by type -- irony, anomaly, timing, double-binds ... never got done well. I try again though with my new folder Meta, which is now beginning to illustrate metadifferences by type.

Of course many an instance of macroinformation embodies several types simultaneously. A play may employ literature, both prose and verse, music, painting, dance ... acting ... A joke may employ timing and discrepancy and irony ... And I don’t pretend that my own awareness of types is yet efficiently streamlined ... But I do intend to clone this and other similar new illustrations into the Meta folder.

Boobs

Mi.org has employed Captain Renault's corrupt hypocrisy in the movie Casablanca as a touchstone for metadifference which manifests as the macroinformation called "irony" in drama: what we hear on the soundtrack doesn't match what we see on the screen. It of course is one of an endless assortment of instances. Another just marched into my head.

George Carlin had a TV sitcom which took place in a bar. George is a regular. Also regular is a plastic surgeon. George, his father, his cronies, are salt-of-the-earth blue collar guys. The plastic surgeon is held in low esteem because he treats vanities, not diseases.

The plastic surgeon decides he's going to do something about his own image and exits the bar with missionary fervor. He returns with a homeless woman and announces what he'll do for this sorry example of fellow humanity. "Could I have a sandwich?" she asks. The plastic surgeon stands the object of his charity before the group. She's malnourished, she's dirty. She certainly needs some soup to go with the sandwich, a bath, fumigation ... clean, warm lodgings, a solid week's sleep ... Sculpting his imagined improvements with his hands around the sad female form, the surgeon announces his plans: he's going to pump her bust out to here, he's going to puff her bottom out the there, he'll liposuck cellulite from her thighs ... the tab strictly on him.

Information is triggered by difference. Metainformation arises from different differences. Macroinformation emerges where the metadifferences cross some threshold of complexity.

This doctor's sense of human service is as metadifferent from familiar ideals as Captain Renault's pocketing Rick's cash as he closes down Rick's casino is metadifferent from minimal standards for society working.

Simultaneously, if WWII was an example of civilization going rapidly to hell in a hand basket, and absurdity is still accelerating decades later in Carlin's sitcom, how come the world is still such a funny place?

Metadifference in Music

We’re all born to speak. Only severe defects, severe accidents, stop us.
Singing is natural, but not quite all of us take to it. Culture can see that few of us can afford to practice it.
Me, I’d rather belong to a tribe that sang indifferently, but together, than have perpetual seats at the concert hall. (And these days Id’ rather play Bach on my own keyboard, however poorly I perform, than listen to my old collection of Bach played by Helmut Walcha, Wanda Landowska, Richter ...)

When we speak our vocal chords vibrate. When any string vibrates, a tone, a complex tone, variable tones, are generated. As Pythagoras showed, a vibrating string divides along its length into sub-vibrations, producing sub-frequencies: overtones. Complex sound.

With a matched set of strings, as on a lute, as on a piano, the complex tones, selected played, produce complexities that stimulate us pleasurably but that are not so complex as to be beyond comprehension.

We "all" speak, fewer of us sing, fewer still pluck, blow, or beat instruments. But when competent pluckers, blowers, strikers ... singers get together, wow.

Macroinformational potential emanates with such vibrations, whether from one vocal chord or a full orchestra with chorus.

My efforts thus far to talk about music as macroinformation at Macroinformation.org have not developed satisfactorily. When I get an idea it thus far hasn’t developed as clearly or as far as my discussions of jokes, movies, drama ... poetry .. theology or politics. Now I try again:

Macroinformation Generated from Metadifference

Strike middle C on a keyboard. The single note is complex. (Delving the complexity must follow, but not in an introduction.) All the other notes, including notes not in Western music, are implicit in it; some aggressively implicit: the G, for example. Strike the C and the G keys more or less together. The result is more complex, the metadifferences more urgent. The "single" sound of a chord, even only two notes, has more macroinformational potential than the single sound of the C alone.

Play a standard C chord: C, E, G. Music theory tells us that the E is a major third above the C. The G however, already established as a perfect fifth above the C, is a minor third above the E. ! Minor as well as major is implicit in the simplest triad.
(If all notes are implicit in one note, are all chords implicit in one simple triad?) (Are all words implicit in one word? I don’t think so; but I see that all chords are implicit from a single triad, from a single two note chord.)

Had I been given standard music lessons, a teacher would have shown me a C chord: middle C, next E up, next G up. At some point the teacher would have shown me the first inversion of the C chord: E, then G, then C. Around then I would also have been shown the second inversion: G, then C, then E. Before I could play at all well I’d have to be able to play inversions of C all the way up and down the keyboard: with some sureness of hand, and some velocity. Long before that I would have been shown the F chord and the G7: and D major, G major, etc. And C7, and C major 7, and so forth -- diminished, augmented, suspended ... -- all of them invertible.
As it is I’ve picked much of this up from the REAL Book (some of the charts sketched from recordings (and live performances) by friends of mine: though they were my friends long before I ever had an actual copy of the REAL Book or tried a bit at playing myself). Benny Golson’s Killer Joe commences with measures which rock back and forth between the 7 chord of the Root and the 7 chord of the Root’s 7, the rocking quickening to within the measures as the form progresses. Joe Zawinul’s Mercy, Mercy, Mercy commences with measures which rock back and forth, slightly syncopated, between the Root 7 and the 7 of the perfect IV of the Root. As with the Golson piece, the measures increasingly pick up something of the companion chord. In both cases other complexities are soon introduced, but for the moment I focus just on the openings.

The Golson example rocks modally, the Zawinul example rocks right in the heart of standard Western harmony. Modes are very old, but standard harmony is more familiar: or was until Miles Davis.
Both examples start with seventh chords: typical jazz. My source, the Bb REAL Book, is already transposed: D7, C7 (not D, C!) for the Golson tune; C7, F7 for the Zawinul.

When starting, and ending, with seventh chords, what is the Root? Complex, complex, complex. Jazz typically plunges us into the middle of the sea: where some of us are comfortable.
However complex, this is not unreachable by analysis.

Now: a seventh chord, C7, for example, un-inverted, plays: C, E, G, Bb. That is: base note, major third, minor third, minor third.
A standard major triad sounds (ahem) complete to standard Western ears. A seventh chord, in context of nothing, implies something else. A C7 implies F major. Zawinul follows C7 with F7: implying Bb major! (And Bb is the 7 of C minor: and itself implies F major, which implies C7!) In other words jazz of this sort plunges us straight into the middle of ... we don’t know what! (Some people like being at sea; many don’t. But anyone will be stimulated by these complexities.)

Analyzing the metadifferences involved in imbalances subverting balances may prove to be as complex as looking at a pound of lard and talking hyperstring theory, but I hope you see: given enough scut work, it could be done. And should be done: at least once: just to show that it can be.

I’m not going far into the mine here. I’m showing that there is a mine: very deep.

Meantime, imagine for yourself, with just another tiny push from me, how many directions we could go from here: Rhythm complexities: four against one, three against one, two against one, two against three ... one against three, four ... Imbalances subverting balances, all generated from metadifference ... initially, from difference.

PS My examples of macroinformation thus far have primarily involved verbiage. Sure: I’m a speaker, a writer ... was involved in English. But it was music that ravished me before I spent much time as a kid reading Soroyan, or Dickens, or Keats. Ah, but then the culture also encouraged me to talk (and write) about Dickens, Keats ..., and smacked me if I tried to talk about Louie, Kid Ory, Count Basie, Duke Ellington. So: I grew up with my literature more stroked than smacked, my music more smacked than stroked. I was an adult before I acquired -- by myself

Emergence

Mitchell Resnick's programming and teaching with his Star Logo should help us shrug off some of our centralist assumptions. It's hard enough to see that a flock of birds is self-organized, that there is no leader, that there is no need for an instruction such as "fly in a V" in a bird's genes. Resnick suggests that instructions as simple as 1) "Fly close to another bird" 2) "Don't bump into it" might do.
I look forward to weaving related thoughts into Mi.org modules new and old.

One thing I expect to emphasize: all of the work helpful to my conception of macroinformation, especially of macroinformation as emergent from but not IN the data, comes from science. My own discipline of English has been utterly useless. No wonder my peers seldom had a clue what I was talking about: they'll generally illiterate in science.

Metadifferences: Mrs. Arnold

Mother-love is a corner stone of human values. It always has been.
Belief in judgment, in separating Chosen from goy, sheep from goats, believers from infidels ... is and has always been core in the foundation of the deisms most familiar to the world-wide West.

The Hellenes contrasted the land of the living with the land of the gods. They also contrasted the land of the living with the shadow place of the dead. So too did the Jews. Soo-too is now familiar throughout civilization: anyplace with excess supply, public records. Christians call it "heaven and hell": and so do I.

Now: We all agree that Benedict Arnold’s mother must have loved him. How sanguine are we about that love once he decided that his dignity as a knowledge capitalist (a civilized professional, a man of learning, a skilled soldier, trained for management) required that he get paid: preferring to get paid over dying broke for his rebelling kleptocracy? Will we tolerate Mrs. Arnold loving little Benedict after he’s been branded a traitor?

Lots of people stuck up for Nixon in 1971, ’72, ’73; how many stick up for Nixon in 2005? How are such loyalists treated by the turncoat majority who supported Nixon in 1971 but who don’t want to hear him mentioned in 2005?

If a mother burning in hell looks up past the brimstone and sees her little Willie shining from heaven, I don’t imaging people will object to her still loving him. But how about if she, dancing among clouds, beholds little Willie getting pitchforked from one cauldron to another?

When do we get to find out if Nixon is dancing among clouds or getting ’forked around?

I also want to know where we will be at the same time. And can there be any "we" if one portion is singing with the seraphs while the other is graduating among devils.

I love metadifferences. I love thinking up new ones.

K. has a Heaven and Hell section, though you’ll do better to just enter the terms in the Search field: because examples are scattered throughout. At Mi.org, this sort of material has thus far gone among the Examples, particularly under the concept of Double Bind.
The thing is though, since all pk domains are on the same server, the Search feature will find matches wherever they are.

Wither Macroinformation?

I’m pleased with my new Macroinformation Entrance, the more pleased with changes and revisions thus far, but there’s something I lost sight of in these early drafts that must find prominence in the next workings:

Complex information such as we find in the greatest art, such as my touchstone phrase from Shakespeare, "salad days," is not the end of macroinformation. I don’t say that Macroinformation will prove to be infinite in its mathematical sense, but it’s plenty infinite in its ordinary sense: no end in view.

Macroinformation emerges from interactions, frictions for example, among metadiffences. I’ve traced typical differences from I0 to I3, but marked I3 as In: no end in sight.

What’s over the horizon of what I’ve said so far (in the new Entrance)? Interactions among any metadifferences we can think of. Consider for example:The differences between man’s view of himself before Darwin and after Darwin

The differences between any view before any revolution and after any revolution.

If macroinformation seethes from Captain Renault’s hypocritical behavior in Casablanca, how much more macroinformation might seethe from a comparison of The Temple of Jerusalem’s records of Jesus’ trial, the Roman government’s records, and accounts found nearly a century later in the emerging gospels?

All that might pale beside macroinformation issuing from a rationalist (someone who performs well on the Wason Test) comparing any society’s view of itself and that view strictly falsified (which, in my view, is actually what the trial of Jesus could show us (and it doesn’t matter in this context how literally true any of the stories are).

Oh, and we mustn’t forget this one, one we can only imagine (and probably not imagine very well): consider the difference between the records that any society keeps and the evidence that any society doesn’t keep.What books don’t get published?
What evidence gets lost from the precinct evidence room?
What stories don’t get reported?
I’ll have to reintegrate my examples once I work them into the current draft and into new modules. Understand, many of these points are already in old modules.

I'm pleased enough for the moment with Mi.org's new top page, but I note here some dissatisfactions and editing plans:

Macroinformation concentrates on complex information in the universe of Sentiens. Information -- difference, improbability -- I don't doubt are also essential in Pleroma (the physical universe). I don't doubt that differencee and improbabilty are how hyperstrings make different quarks, how different quarks, make different sub-particles, how different sub-particles make different atoms ... molecules ... How pretty much the same string of DNA makes worms, mice, or men ... Information drives how our bodies form, grow, operate ... whether or not we are conscious, no matter what we are conscious/unconscious of.
